Coaches

WELCOME COACHES!

On behalf of the Virginia Amateur Hockey Association board we would like to thank you for your willingness to coach a team this season. Please know we appreciate all the time and energy you will put into running your team.  If you have any questions or need any assistance during the season, please do not hesitate to contact a board member.

All aspiring VAHA coaches must pass a background check, be registered with USA Hockey, complete the age specific online module, concussion training and watch the SafeSport video prior to the start of the season. Coaches will also have to complete CEP trainings per USA hockey & MN Hockey guidelines.  Follow the links below.

 

Parent volunteers, team managers, and board members will have to complete background screening and safe sport training also.  


COACHING STEP 1: Submit letter of interest in coaching including which team/level, reason for wanting to coach, coaching philosophy, and what makes you a good coach to the VAHA board.   (Yearly) 

Once you have confirmation that you have been chosen as a coach complete steps 2 and on......



COACHING STEP 2: All coaches must register themselves on the USA Hockey website. You will register, pay the fee, and print the registration confirmation. USA Hockey registration confirmation form can be submitted to a VAHA board member.  VAHA will reimburse coaching fee...see reimbursement form below.

COACHING STEP 3: Submit Background Screening request - only if you did not have a screening completed the previous season - contact your registration coordinator if you have any questions.  

*NEW Coaches are not allowed on the ice until screening has been submitted.  

SafeSport - Background Screening (ALL COACHES & Team Managers & Locker Room Supervisors)

Follow this link to begin background screening. You will get an email stating a "PASS" or "FAIL" result a few days later. Please print and give copy to Carol Moreland, Pete Coldagelli, or Rick Flatley.

COACHING STEP 4: Complete required training including: 

  1. Safe Sport (first year and every other year thereafter)
  2. Concussion Training (yearly - also included in age specific modules)
  3. Coaching Education Program (CEP's) - All coaches begin by attending a Level 1 clinic and then progress through the levels.  Coaches can remain as a Level 1 coach throughout Mini's and Mites then will need to progress through the levels.  
  4. Age Specific Modules - complete for level coaching (8U Mite & Mini, 10U Squirts, 12U Peewee, 14U Bantam)

You must register with USA Hockey before watching video. Follow instructions for the SafeSport Program Training. Video is approximately 90 minutes and has some short quizes. Print out certificate of completion and give to Carol Moreland, Pete Coldagelli, or Rick Flatley.
